Campaigns… Dungeon Delving

Something we get asked a lot about is the possibility of using the Fantasy Cards for  “dungeon delving”. Mind you we are not talking about true role-playing with individual characters and such, but rather the simple joy of following a band of heroic adventurers as they battle non-stop through a classic underground lair of evil. Can this be replicated in an easy and enjoyable fashion with the Fantasy Cards?  The answer is most definitely yes!

At its heart, dungeon delving is really just a series of connected battles – much like a traditional wargaming campaign (which is where the roots of role-playing lie…). Emulating this with the Fantasy Cards is simply a matter of selecting the style of dungeon delving campaign you would like to play, and then structuring your campaign to fit it.

Typically there are two main types of dungeon delving campaigns. The first is played is with an overarching theme to the battles, with the theme being potentially impacted by the outcome of each battle. Because of the unifying theme, these campaigns are usually referred to as Storyline Campaigns. The battles are driven by the storyline of the campaign and the results, in turn, impact the story.

The other main style of dungeon delving campaign is focused on the campaign being an endurance test for the heroes. They are simply trying to survive the whole delve with minimal losses, since the losses carryover from battle to battle. We call these types of campaigns (appropriately enough) Endurance Campaigns.

In the next installment we’ll go into more detail about the first type of campaign – the Dungeon Delving Storyline Campaign
